History
The foundation was originally established on May 30, 2021 with a broad objective to promote and support pilgrimage through financial support. In the period 2021 to 2024, more than €13,000 was provided to 14 projects in Belgium, France and Spain. In total, 11 different organizations received direct or indirect support. In 2025, it was decided to focus the foundation more and to place all communication under the name “Vrienden van Le Coeur du Chemin” or Association des Amis du Coeur de Chemin” and to make the foundation website an integral part of the Le Coeur du Chemin website. The broader framework objective remains applicable.
Goals
For many people it is a dream to one day walk to Santiago de Compostela. Traditionally this was from a religious point of view, but nowadays it is often a spiritual quest. This quest is often started after a traumatic event in someone’s life or at the moment that there are major life questions. Walking, being at one with nature, the peace and the contact with other pilgrims often give meaning to the future and bring balance back into the life of the pilgrim. This is a slow process and that is why it is important to go on pilgrimage for a longer period of time (weeks).
The foundation “Vrienden van Le Coeur du Chemin” aims to make the operation of the hostel “Le Coeur du Chemin” possible. In addition, the foundation promotes pilgrimage in the broadest sense of the word for the self-development of all people from young to old.
The foundation does this by financially and practically supporting the hostel for both the daily operation and further development. The foundation is non for profit.

Le Coeur du Chemin is funded entirely by donations from pilgrims who stay there and can only exist through the efforts of many volunteers. If the donations from the pilgrim guests are insufficient to cover the operation, the foundation “Vrienden van Le Coeur du Chemin” can provide further support. “Vrienden van Le Coeur du Chemin” also support specific projects to improve the hostel, such as creating new showers and toilets and installing solar panels.
